Austenitic, Ferritic e Martensitic
Austenitic Stainless Steel
Authentic stainless steel is ductile and displays excellent formability and fusability. It is a non-magnetic alloy and cannot be hardened by thermal treatments. The most popular Austenitic stainless steel is the AISI 304 type, which contains, basically, 18% chromium and 8% nickel, and has a miximum of 0.08% carbon. It combines a low level of [run off, discharge, drainage] with a high level of resistence and durability, offering superior properties for cold working.
Ferritic Stainless Steel
Ferritic stainless steel is magnetic and partially hardened by thermal treatment. It is used, basically, in a heated state. In general, Ferritic stainless steel contains an element of chromium that is greater than the Martensitic steel, and offer superior corrosion resistance. Within the Ferritic steel family, the principal type is AISI 430, which contains 16-18% chrome and a maximum of 0.12% carbon.
Martensitic Stainless Steel
This is magnetic steel, hardened by thermal treatment. It displays excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion and is noted for its ability to obtain various degrees of durability and mechanical resistance. Martensitic steel should be chosen by weighing its mechanical properties against its level of corrosion resistance. The main steel in this group is type AISI 420.
Types and applications
AISI 301: Structures and equipment for the aeronautic industry, railways and highways, stamping applications.
AISI 302: Equipment for the automotive industry, aeronautics, naval vessels, orthodonture, dental & surgical instruments, pharmaceutical instruments, cosmetics, textiles, domestic utensils, cutlery and refrigeration.
AISI 304 and 304 L: Equipment for aeronautics industry, railways, naval vessels, petrochemical processing equipment, pulp & paper manufacturing, textiles, freezers, hospital equipment, dental instruments, pharmaceutical instruments, cosmetics, chemical processing, domestic utensils, cryogenic installations, distilleries and breweries, electro-domestic goods, photography, pipes and tanks in general, general molding and forming, siding.
AISI 310S: Equipment for chemical and petrochemical processing, cement and metalwork, industrial ovens, heat exchange systems, heaters, and gas turbines.
AISI 316 and 316 L: Equipment for aeronautics industry, railways, naval vessels, chemical and petrochemical processing, pharmaceutical instruments, cosmetics, textiles, pulp & paper manufacturing, rubber, paint, nutritive, dairy, medical and hospital equipment, dental & surgical instruments, mining, refineries, manufacturing of pipes, pressure vessels, distilleries and breweries.
AISI 321: Equipment for aeronautics industry, railways, naval vessels, chemical and petrochemical processing, refineries, fabrication of equipment subject to heat in the area of carbonate precipitation. siding, kettles and boilers, heaters, pressure vessels.
AISI 409: Gas exhaust systems for combustion explosion engines (such as automotive exhaust systems).
AISI 410: Mining industry, surgical instruments, cutlery, precision instruments, sieves, pumps, valves, hospital equipment, dental and surgical instruments.
AISI 420: Mining industry, surgical instruments, cutlery, precision instruments, cutting blades, disc brakes, hospital equipment, dental and surgical instruments.
AISI 430: Nitric acid manufacturing equipment; automotive trim; domestic items such as tableware, stoves, refrigerators, and sinks; coining machinery; elevator siding; refrigerated counters.

FINISHING TYPES
Nº 1: Heat laminated, thermically treated, mechanically and chemically scoured
Nº 3: Burnishing obtained with abrasives up to nº 100 mesh.
Nº 4: Burnishing obtained with abrasives nºs 120 - 150 mesh, afterward treat with harder abrasives
Nº 5: Same process as number 7, followed by a light buffing with gloss cylinders.
2D: Matte. Cold laminated, thermically treated, chemically scoured.
2B: Glossy. Cold laminated, thermically treated, chemically scoured, followed by a light buffing with gloss cylinders.
